Nami Island Map: Wharf, Tree Lanes and Where Everything Is

A good Nami Island Map starts at Nami Wharf, where the ferry lands, and follows six named tree lanes across a island with more than 30,000 trees. Regular admission with the round-trip ferry is KRW 19,000 per adult.

Quick answer The map in short

The island sits in the Bukhan River near Gapyeong, reached by a 5-minute ferry that lands at Nami Wharf. Named lanes include Metasequoia Lane, the 100 m Songpa Gingko Tree Lane and the 300 m Tulip Tree Lane. The official English leaflet with the island map is free to download from the island's own site.

Key takeaways

Where is Nami Island in Korea?

Nami Island belongs to Chuncheon in Gangwon Province, but the ferry leaves from Gapyeong Wharf in Gapyeong, Gyeonggi Province.

The island's political address and its practical entry point are in two different provinces, which confuses a lot of visitors. For what to do at each spot, read things to do in Nami Island.

The two addresses to know

The island address is 1 Namiseom-gil, Namsan-myeon, Chuncheon-si, Gangwon-do. The ferry entry wharf is 1024 Bukhangangbyeon-ro, Gapyeong-eup, Gapyeong-gun. There is no land route to the island, so the wharf is where your journey really starts.

Put the Gapyeong wharf address into your navigation app. A Chuncheon search can send you to a wrong road, since you cannot drive to the island.

What is special about Nami Island?

It is a river island turned into Korea's largest private garden, a mock nation called Naminara Republic, and the filming location of the drama Winter Sonata.

Three things set the island apart from a normal park, and all three show up on the map.

A garden nation

Nami was designated Korea's largest private garden on July 31, 2024, with more than 30,000 trees. Its garden map covers 27 gardens grouped as Theme, Memorial, Story and Citizen's gardens.

The island declared its own cultural independence as Naminara Republic, a mock nation with its own flag, stamps, currency and passport. It promotes coexistence of nature and human beings.

Culture runs deep too. The island hosts concerts, exhibitions and festivals such as the Friendship Blossoms Party in April, the International Children's Book Festival in May, the Acoustic Festival in June, Somewhat Splash in July and August, Winter Wonder Nami Island in January and February, and Kimchi-making Day on the third weekend of November. Nearly 2 million people visit each year, over 700,000 of them from 122 foreign countries.

Why the lanes matter

Named after General Nami, a notable figure in Korean history, the island was formed when Cheongpyeong Dam was built in 1944. Forestation began in 1965 under founder Minn Byeong-do. The 2001 KBS drama Winter Sonata was shot here and drew visitors from across Asia.

What do you see when you step off the ferry at Nami Wharf?

You step off beside the Tourism Bureau, where strollers and wheelchairs are rented, and the Central Korean Pine Tree Lane runs from the wharf toward the central plaza.

The official downloads describe facilities but not the arrival layout, so here is what the landing looks like in practice.

First steps on the island

The regular ferry crossing takes about 5 minutes. First ferry to the island is 08:00, the last is 21:00, and the first ferry off the island is 08:05 with the last at 21:05.

Right of Nami Wharf sits the Tourism Bureau, where stroller rental costs KRW 3,000 for children 24 months and under and wheelchairs are free. Near the wharf you also find the Cookie House, the booth for the Story Tour Bus, which loops the island in 20 minutes for KRW 10,000.

To go deeper fast, walk the Central Korean Pine Tree Lane, the lane that links Nami Wharf to the central plaza. It is the spine of the island and the best first walk. If you stay at the island hotel and contact it before leaving Gapyeong Wharf, it offers pick-up from Nami Wharf, and the walk from the wharf takes about 15 minutes along that same pine lane.

Where are the tree-lined lanes on the Nami Island Map?

Six named lanes cover the island: Metasequoia Lane, Central Korean Pine Tree Lane, Songpa Gingko Tree Lane, Cherry Tree Lane, Tulip Tree Lane and Reed Woods Lane.

The lanes are the reason most people come, and the map marks each one by its trees.

The six lanes

The Central Korean Pine Tree Lane runs from Nami Wharf to the central plaza, so it is usually your first lane. Metasequoia Lane is the famous allée with Sonata Cafe at its edge. Songpa Gingko Tree Lane is short, about 100 m, and glows gold in late October to mid-November.

Tulip Tree Lane runs about 300 m. Cherry Tree Lane blooms from mid-April to early May. Reed Woods Lane lines the water's edge.

What facilities does the Nami Island Map mark?

The map labels the Main Facility Building, a first-aid point, an infirmary, Cafe 222, the artshop and the tree-lined path, plus the Bike Center and two souvenir shops.

Everything you might need in an emergency or a coffee break has a marked spot.

Key marked points

The English map labels the Main Facility Building, the first-aid point, the infirmary, Cafe 222 and the artshop. The Bike Center sits in the centre of the island between the UNICEF Lounge and Unchi Garden, opens 09:00-18:00 weather permitting, and riding round the island by bike takes about one hour. Single bicycles cost KRW 5,000 per 30 minutes or KRW 9,000 per hour.

The Charity Train runs between the Song Museum entrance and the central station in the main square, KRW 4,000 one way.

Two souvenir shops are marked: Artshop Imagine Nami in front of Baplex, phone +82 31-580-8012, and Artshop Snowman at Mayhouse, phone +82 31-580-8019. Cafe-wise, Sonata Cafe in front of Metasequoia Lane sells the Sweet Rice Ssiat Hotteok and ice flake sundaes, take-away only.

Where do you find the official Nami Island Map PDF?

The official English leaflet with the island map is posted under Download Materials on the Nami Island English site, with leaflets in 8 other languages.

The island also offers program guides, newsletters and seasonal brochures in multiple languages on the same page.

What to download

Go to the Download Materials section of the English site. You get the leaflet with the island map, plus program guides and seasonal brochures. If you prefer paper, take a leaflet at the wharf on arrival.

If something is unclear, the island answers questions by phone on 031-580-8114 or by e-mail at namitour@naminara.com. The island is open 365 days a year, and KTO lists island hours as 08:00-21:00.

Which map app works best, Google Maps or a local one?

Use Naver Map or Kakao Map, because Google Maps gives limited driving directions in Korea.

For finding the island and its surroundings, the local Korean mapping services do the job better.

Setting your destination

Type the Gapyeong wharf address, 1024 Bukhangangbyeon-ro, Gapyeong-eup, into Naver Map or Kakao Map. Naver Map is the local Korean mapping service for locating the island and everything around it. A Chuncheon search leads to a wrong road, since there is no land route to the island.

On the island itself the paper leaflet map works better than any app, because the lanes and gardens are marked in detail there. School zone speed limits of 30 km/h apply if you drive in the area.

How much time do you need in Nami Island?

Most visitors fit the wharf, the main lanes and the central plaza into a half day, and cycling round the island takes about one hour.

The island is compact enough for a half-day route, longer if you add gardens and cafes.

Building your route

A simple route: land at Nami Wharf, walk the Central Korean Pine Tree Lane to the central plaza, then Metasequoia Lane, the 100 m Songpa Gingko Tree Lane and the 300 m Tulip Tree Lane, and ride the Charity Train back if your legs are tired. Add about an hour if you rent a bike and circle the whole island.

If you want a full day around the area, Nami Island and the Garden of Morning Calm tour from Seoul, rail bike optional runs 10 to 12 hours for $54 per person and covers the island plus the nearby garden. See our guide on how long to spend in Nami Island for more route ideas.

Where are the Garden of Morning Calm, Petite France and Alpaca World on the map?

All three sit in the Gapyeong area around the island, and KTO groups the valley, Jara Island and the Garden of Morning Calm into one Gapyeong course.

Plot them as a cluster around the island rather than separate trips.

The neighbours

Petite France is at 1063 Hoban-ro, Cheongpyeong-myeon, open 09:00-18:00 all year with free parking. Its operator says to get off at Gapyeong or Cheongpyeong station and board the Gapyeong Tourist Circulation Bus. KTO lists Petite France admission at adult KRW 16,000, teen KRW 16,000 and child KRW 12,000.

The Garden of Morning Calm, at 432 Sumogwon-ro, Sang-myeon, Gapyeong, opens 08:30-19:00 and 10:00-21:00 in winter, with adult admission KRW 11,000, teen KRW 8,500 and child KRW 7,500. Its Lighting Festival runs 17:00-21:00 in the winter season, until 23:00 on Saturdays.

Alpaca World is open 10:00-18:00, admission KRW 18,000 for ages 36 months to 64, and closes every Monday and Tuesday unless they are public holidays.

For the Petite France combination, Nami Island, Petite France and Italian Village and Garden of Morning Calm tour costs $78.10 per person. For alpacas, Alpaca World, Nami Island and rail bike or Garden of Morning Calm tour from Seoul costs $74 per person.
