Is Nami Island Worth Visiting?

Is Nami Island worth visiting? This guide gives the verdict, the costs, the best season and the tours that make the day easier. Yes, Nami Island is worth visiting if you go in autumn or winter and pair it with a second stop, because the island itself takes 1.5 to 2 hours while travel from Seoul takes 3 to 4 hours. Nearly 2 million people a year agree, with over 700,000 arriving from 122 countries.

Quick answer The short verdict

For most travellers, yes, but not for the island alone. The tree-lined walk takes 1.5 to 2 hours, entry with the round-trip ferry is KRW 19,000 per adult, and the 3 to 4 hours of transit from Seoul only pays off if you add a second stop like the Garden of Morning Calm or a rail bike.

Key takeaways

Is Nami Island really worth it?

Yes, worth visiting at least once as an easy escape from Seoul, as long as you accept the crowds and go in the right season with a second stop attached.

Nami Island is a half-moon shaped river island on the upper Han River in Gangwon Province, about 2.5 hours from Seoul. You cannot drive to it. A ferry from Gapyeong Wharf is the only way in unless you ride the zip wire.

The case for going

The tree lanes are genuinely beautiful, and reviewers describe clean, well-maintained lawns and gardens with soft instrumental music playing in certain areas. One long-running guide calls it one of the most beautiful places in South Korea, beautiful in all seasons except midsummer. The island opened as we know it when forestation began in 1965, and the 2001 KBS drama Winter Sonata was filmed here, which is why much of the island is themed around the show.

The case against

The island is artificial. Rising water from the Cheongpyeong Dam construction in 1944 flooded the land, so the tree lanes are a planted attraction rather than wild nature. One food and travel writer calls it the Disneyland of Korea and tells first-time visitors they have better options.

The name comes from General Nami, who died at 28 after being falsely accused of treason under King Sejo, the seventh Joseon king, and a tour company later developed the grave and the island as an amusement park. The crowds are a real turn-off, especially around the Winter Sonata filming spots.

What you get against what it takes

The honest rule is this. The island walk itself takes 1.5 to 2 hours. Getting there and back by public transport takes 3 to 4 hours.

That means Nami alone is mostly a day of commuting, so the day only becomes worth it when you bolt on a second stop.

What you getWhat it takes

What does a day at Nami Island cost?

The core cost is the KRW 19,000 adult entry with round-trip ferry, plus train fare of ₩6,900 from Yongsan, before food and extras.

Nami calls its entry ticket a visa, part of the island's act as Naminara Republic, a self-declared micronation with its own flag, stamps and passport. Prices below come from the island's own pages and KTO.

Entry and island extras

Ferries run every 10 to 30 minutes and the crossing takes about 5 minutes. If you want to arrive by zip wire instead, the ride drops from an 80 m tower over roughly 1 km of river, and the price includes island admission and the return ferry. Riders must be 140 to 200 cm tall and 45 to 120 kg.

The tour alternative

A guided day trip removes the planning entirely. The most popular option pairs Nami with the Garden of Morning Calm for $54 per person over 10 to 12 hours, rated 4.7 from 1,353 reviews. If you want a bigger day out, the Seoraksan, Nami Island and Garden of Morning Calm trip runs 14 hours at $89.40 per person with a 4.9 rating.

Nami Island from Seoul: how do you get there?

Take the ITX-Cheongchun train from Yongsan or Cheongnyangni to Gapyeong Station, then walk 20 minutes or ride bus 10-4 for 5 minutes to the wharf.

The ferry leaves from Gapyeong Wharf at 1024 Bukhangangbyeon-ro in Gapyeong, even though the island itself belongs to Chuncheon in Gangwon Province.

By train and bus

The ITX-Cheongchun takes about an hour from Yongsan and roughly 40 minutes from Cheongnyangni. The slower Gyeongchun Line from Sangbong takes about 50 minutes and costs less. Gapyeong Station sits about 1.5 km from the wharf.

By direct shuttle

A daily direct shuttle leaves Hongik Univ Station Exit 4 at 09:00, Namsan Yejang in Myeongdong at 09:40 and DDP Station Exit 9 at 09:50, reaching Nami at 11:30. The return leaves the island at 16:30. No pets are allowed.

The simplest way to book a seat is the round-trip shuttle bus.

Ferry hours

The island is open 365 days a year. The first ferry to the island is 08:00 and the last is 21:00, with the last ferry off at 21:05. Ferries run every 10 to 20 minutes through the middle of the day, and an icebreaker keeps them running when the river freezes.

What do people do at Nami Island?

People walk the tree lanes, rent bikes, photograph the Winter Sonata filming spots, visit the Picture Book Library, and meet the ostriches and other animals that roam the island.

You enter through a mock immigration desk, because Naminara Republic plays at being its own nation. After that the island is a flat, easy loop.

The main loop and the fun stuff

Walking the lanes takes 1.5 to 2 hours. The Bike Center rents single bikes at ₩5,000 per 30 minutes and riding round the island takes about one hour. There are folk art installations, including one made of recycled soju bottles.

TreeGo costs ₩13,000 to ₩27,000 depending on the number of passes, weekends and public holidays only. The Charity Train costs ₩4,000 one way and the Story Tour Bus is ₩10,000 for a 20-minute tour. Tents are not allowed and drones are banned.

A time budget for the day

Give yourself 2 hours on the island, 3 to 4 hours of transit, and time for a second stop. That is why the whole day runs 9 to 14 hours. If that sounds heavy, a guided option like the Garden of Morning Calm combo does the driving for you.

What is the best month to visit Nami Island?

Autumn is the best season, with colour from mid-October to early December and ginkgo at its peak late October to mid-November.

The island changes completely with the seasons, and the honest verdict depends heavily on when you go.

Season by season

Cherry blossom usually blooms from mid-April to early May. Autumn is the season experienced visitors rate highest. Winter is stark and quiet, and the ferry keeps running thanks to an icebreaker.

Summer is the weak spot. Visitors got bored by rows of green trees, and midsummer is the one season even a fan skips, so is Nami Island worth visiting in summer usually comes back no.

SeasonVerdict
Autumn, mid-October to early DecemberBest season, arrive early for the foliage crowds
Late October to mid-NovemberPeak ginkgo yellow
Spring, mid-April to early MayCherry blossom, busy
WinterWorth it for Winter Sonata fans and snow photos
MidsummerSkip it, the green lanes bore most visitors

So is it worth it in June, September or November?

In June, the trees are fully green and most visitors find the island underwhelming, so pair it with Alpaca World or a rail bike if you must go. September sits before the colour turns, so the same rule applies. November is the sweet spot, since ginkgo peaks late October to mid-November and autumn colour runs into early December, making is Nami Island worth visiting in November an easy yes.

Who will love Nami Island and who should skip it?

Winter Sonata fans, first-time visitors wanting an easy escape from Seoul, families and photographers will love it, while travellers chasing wild nature or visiting in midsummer should skip it.

The island divides opinion more than most Korean attractions, so it pays to know which camp you fall into before committing 9 to 14 hours.

You will love it if

You grew up on Winter Sonata, since much of the island is themed around the show. You want an easy, flat, well-kept day outside the city without hiking boots. You are travelling with children or dogs under 20 kg on a leash.

You like photographing tree tunnels, and you go in autumn foliage or winter snow. See more ideas in our things to do guide on Nami Island.

Skip it if

You expect wild, untouched nature, because the island is a planted attraction on flooded land. You are in Seoul for a short first trip with limited days, since one writer argues first-timers have better options. You can only travel in midsummer, when the green rows bore most visitors.

And you hate crowds, because the famous lanes get packed in foliage season. Reddit-style verdicts from travellers tend to agree the crowds are the main complaint.

What to do instead or alongside

The Garden of Morning Calm sits nearby with adult entry at ₩11,000 and a Lighting Festival each winter. The Gangchon rail bike at Gimyujeong costs ₩40,000 per two-seat bike. Petite France is a French-themed village open 09:00 to 18:00.

Alpaca World charges ₩18,000 admission and closes Mondays and Tuesdays. A guided private tour can chain several of these together in one day.

Is Nami Island worth visiting in winter?

Yes, winter is one of the better times to go, since the bare tree lanes, snow scenes and Winter Sonata nostalgia work well together and the ferries keep running.

The island is open 365 days a year, and an icebreaker ferry keeps the crossing going when the river freezes, unless a notice says otherwise.

Making winter count

Pair the island with the Garden of Morning Calm's Lighting Festival, which runs in the evening from mid-December to mid-March with Saturday hours until 23:00. A dedicated winter tour adds Eobi Ice Valley to the day. Dress properly, because the river wind is cold on both wharfs.

Is a day trip to Nami Island worth it, or should you stay overnight?

A day trip is worth it for most people, but staying overnight at Hotel Jeonggwanru lets you enjoy the tree lanes after the day crowds leave.

Most visitors come for the day. A smaller number sleep on the island, because Nami runs its own hotels and bungalows.

Overnight rates

Hotel Jeonggwanru rooms run from ₩148,000 to ₩238,000 depending on room and floor, bungalows for 4 to 10 guests run ₩280,000 to ₩440,000, and atelier houses are ₩200,000. Check-in is 15:00 and check-out 11:00, and reservations open 3 months ahead. If you return again and again, the annual passport with unlimited regular-ferry visits is ₩69,000.
