When Is the Best Time to Visit Nami Island?

Quick answer Best months at a glance

Late October to mid-November is the best time to visit Nami Island, when peak foliage runs and skies are clear and cool. Arrive on the first ferry at 08:00 on a weekday to avoid tour groups, since the crossing takes only about 5 minutes.

Key takeaways

Which month should you pick for Nami Island?

Late October and early November give the best mix of colour, weather and manageable crowds.

The island is open 365 days a year, so no month is closed. The real choice is scenery and crowds, and each month delivers something different.

Month-by-month calendar

Autumn is the headline season. Peak foliage generally falls between mid-October and early December, and it varies slightly each year. Ginkgo colour is usually best from late October to mid-November.

Spring brings cherry blossoms, usually from early April to mid-April, and the island's own notices put the bloom from mid-April to early May, so the window stretches across the month depending on the year.

Winter turns the island into the landscape of the drama Winter Sonata, with snow around late November and January the coldest month.

Summer is hot and humid with possible rain showers, but the greenery is at its fullest and the island is still beautiful.

The single best month

If you want one answer, pick the first half of November. You get late autumn foliage confirmed by the island itself, the clear and cool autumn weather, and weekdays that are calmer than the October holiday rush. Book early, because nearly 2 million people visit the island each year and foliage weekends fill up fast.

When is the peak season for autumn foliage?

Peak foliage at Nami Island generally falls between mid-October and early December, with ginkgo at its best from late October to mid-November.

Autumn is the most popular season on the island, so timing matters both for colour and for crowds.

Where the colour is

The most famous stretches for fall colors are Metasequoia Lane, Ginkgo Tree Lane and Maple Lane. Walk them in that order in the morning light and you will see the island at its best before the day-trip buses arrive.

By mid-November you can still enjoy late autumn foliage, so a trip in the first half of the month rarely misses. Because the exact peak shifts a little each year, check the island's notices close to your travel dates.

When do cherry blossoms bloom on Nami Island?

Cherry blossoms usually bloom from early April to mid-April, and the island's own notice puts the bloom from mid-April to early May.

Spring is the second-best window and the most forgiving one, because mild weather makes a long walk easy.

Spring on the island

Spring weather is pleasant and mild. The island runs a blossom celebration in this window, and the Nami Island Friendship Blossoms Party ran April 5 to 20 in 2025, so expect extra visitors on bloom weekends and extra ferry sailings.

If you can travel on a weekday in early April you get blossom buds or first bloom with far fewer people. Bring a light jacket, since mornings by the river stay cool.

Snow, drama locations and activities

The island is known as the filming location of Winter Sonata, the 2001 KBS drama that drew visitors from across Asia. Snow-covered tree lanes are the signature view.

Winter activities include ice skating, sledding and building snowmen. Pack properly, because January is the coldest month and the river wind is sharp.

Tours That Fit

Guided day trips run in every season and remove the planning work.

What time is best to go to Nami Island?

Arrive on the first ferry at 08:00 on a weekday, before tour buses land from about 09:00 onward.

Crowds matter more than weather on peak foliage days, so the time of day you go decides the experience.

Beating the crowds

The first ferry to the island leaves at 08:00 and regular ferries run every 30 minutes until 09:00, then every 10 to 20 minutes until 18:00. Tour groups from Seoul mostly arrive mid-morning, so the 08:00 to 09:00 slot is the calmest of the day.

A reviewer who left at 5:30 pm found the sun still up, which shows how much usable daylight an early start gives you. Weekdays are quieter than weekends in every season, and mid-November weekdays combine late foliage with the thinnest crowds.

If you cannot start early, late afternoon works too. Ferries run every 30 minutes from 18:00 to 21:00, and the last ferry off the island is at 21:05.

How long do you need to spend at Nami Island?

Half a day is enough to walk the main tree lanes, and a full day lets you add biking and a slow lunch.

The island is small but the walks are the point, so plan by season and daylight.

Planning your hours

The island is open 08:00 to 21:00 all year according to the Korea Tourism Organization. In autumn, arrive at 08:00, walk Metasequoia Lane, Ginkgo Tree Lane and Maple Lane in the morning, rent a bicycle for the loop ride of about one hour, and you have seen the essentials by early afternoon.

In winter, daylight is shorter, so a morning visit is safer. In summer, the long evenings let you stay late, and a reviewer was still in daylight at 5:30 pm. The Bike Center opens 09:00 to 18:00, weather and sunset permitting.

Is Nami Island really worth it?

Yes, if you time it to foliage or blossom season, and the ferry-and-ticket routine is simple once you know it.

The island draws nearly 2 million visitors a year, over 700,000 of them foreign travellers from 122 countries, and most come for the tree-lined scenery.

Tickets and the ferry

All visitors must buy a Nami Island passport, the island's ticket, and take the ferry, because the island is not accessible by land. Regular admission with the round-trip ferry is KRW 19,000 per adult. Discount admission is KRW 16,000 and special admission for children aged 36 months to elementary school is KRW 13,000, both with the regular ferry. Children under 36 months with a guardian enter free.

The first ferry lands at 08:00 and the last leaves at 21:05, with the crossing taking about 5 minutes. Outside the ferry you can enter by motorboat from 09:00 to 18:00 in season, by the zip wire from an 80 m tower, or on a guided day tour from Seoul that bundles transport and tickets.

What should you pack, and how do you get there?

Pack for the season, thick layers in winter and sun gear in summer, and reach the ferry at Gapyeong Wharf by ITX-Cheongchun, the Gyeongchun Line or a direct shuttle.

Weather is the main variable between seasons, and transport decides how early you can arrive.

What to wear each season

Winter tips from the island's guides include a thick coat, thermals, hat, gloves or mittens and a scarf. Summer tips include an umbrella, hat, sunscreen and a water bottle. Autumn needs only a light jacket on most days, thanks to clear skies and cool dry conditions.

Getting there early

From Yongsan, the ITX-Cheongchun to Gapyeong Station takes about 60 minutes, and about 42 minutes from Cheongnyangni. The Gyeongchun Line from Sangbong takes about 50 minutes. Gapyeong Station to the wharf is about 1.5 km, a 20-minute walk or about 5 minutes by the No. 10-4 bus or a taxi.

A daily Seoul to Nami direct shuttle leaves Hongik Univ Station Exit 4 at 09:00, Namsan Yejang at 09:40 and DDP Station Exit 9 at 09:50, reaching the island at 11:30, and returns from Nami at 16:30. For the quietest visit, take the train instead and catch the 08:00 ferry.

Which month should you avoid?

No month is closed, but August is the hardest, with hot and humid weather and possible rain showers.

There is no bad month for access, since ferries run 365 days a year, but comfort varies a lot.

The hardest months

July and August combine heat, humidity and rain showers, which makes long walks less pleasant and crowds heavier on weekends. Mid-winter in January is the coldest month, so it suits you only if you dress for it and want snow scenes.

If your dates force you into August, go on a weekday, arrive before 09:00 and plan indoor or shaded breaks around the middle of the day.
