Why Is Nami Island So Famous?
Why is Nami Island so famous? This guide covers the drama, the tree lanes, the seasons and the island's own republic. Nami Island is famous mainly because the 2002 KBS drama Winter Sonata was filmed there, drawing a surge of Japanese tourists and turning its tree lanes into screen icons. It now welcomes nearly 2 million visitors a year, over 700,000 of them from 122 countries.
Quick answer The short answer on Nami Island's fame
Nami Island is famous first for Winter Sonata, the 2002 KBS drama shot on its tree-lined lanes, which brought a wave of Japanese tourists. Second come the lanes themselves, pine, gingko and metasequoia rows on a half-moon island. Third is the Naminara Republic, a self-declared micronation that gives you a mock passport stamp at the gate. Nearly 2 million people visit each year, more than 700,000 of them from abroad.

What is special about Nami Island?
Its special points are the Winter Sonata filming lanes, four famous tree-lined paths, the Naminara Republic micronation concept and a zip wire arrival over the river.
Four things set this half-moon shaped island apart from other day trips near Seoul. Ranked by how much they explain the fame, here they are.

1. Winter Sonata filming locations
The 2002 KBS drama Winter Sonata was filmed around Nami Island and drove a surge of Japanese tourists that has never really stopped. Metasequoia Lane became world-famous after appearing in the drama, and later shows such as Hi Bye, Mama! and Twenty-Five, Twenty-One were also filmed there. Fans walk the lanes looking for the exact benches and rows of trees from the show.
| Fame driver | What it is | Who it matters most to |
|---|---|---|
| Winter Sonata lanes | The 2002 KBS drama was filmed here, making Metasequoia Lane famous | Drama fans, Japanese and Asian visitors |
| Tree-lined paths | Pine, gingko, metasequoia and redwood lanes across a half-moon island | Photographers, autumn and winter visitors |
| Naminara Republic | A self-declared micronation with passport stamp and own currency | First-time visitors who enjoy a quirky concept |
| Zip wire arrival | A 940 m descent onto the island at speed | Active travellers who want more than a ferry |
2. The tree lanes themselves
The island has numerous lanes lined with pine trees, gingko trees, redwood giants and more. The Central Pine Tree Path is the longest tree-lined path. Nami was designated Korea's largest private garden with more than 30,000 trees.
Autumn colour usually runs from mid-October to early December with ginkgo at its best late October to mid-November, and cherry blossoms usually bloom from mid-April to early May.
3. The Naminara Republic
Nami Island hosts the Naminara Republic, a self-declared micronation and the island's cultural-tourism brand, with its own flag, stamps, currency and passport. Visitors pass through the island's own Immigration and the visa fee includes admission and the round-trip ferry. It is a gimmick, but a well-made one that photographs well.
4. Arriving by zip wire
The zip line opened in 2010 and runs 940 m from an 80-meter tower, reaching about 35 miles per hour and taking about one and a half minutes. It can only be ridden to enter the island, and the ticket includes the return ferry and admission. Rider limits are height 140-200 cm and weight 45-120 kg.
Operator hours are 09:00-18:00.

Is Nami Island a natural island?
No, Nami Island is an artificial island, created when the Cheongpyeong Dam was built and flooded the surrounding land.
The most common wrong belief about Nami Island is that it is a natural island. It is not. The dam changed the river in 1944 and the island appeared as a result.
How the island was formed
Namiseom is a half-moon shaped river island in Chuncheon, Gangwon Province, formed when Cheongpyeong Dam construction in 1944 flooded the surrounding land. Forestation began in 1965 under founder Minn Byeong-do, and the island was developed as a resort from 1966 after Min Byeong-do bought it in 1965.
Where the name comes from
The island is named after General Nami (Nam-Yi), who died at 28 after being falsely accused of treason under King Yejong. So even before the dramas arrived, the island carried a real story from Joseon history.

Which K-drama was filmed on Nami Island?
Winter Sonata is the drama that made the island famous, and Hi Bye, Mama!
One drama built the island's reputation, and others have kept it alive on screen.

Winter Sonata, the drama that changed everything
The 2002 KBS drama Winter Sonata was filmed around Nami Island and drove a surge of Japanese tourists. Metasequoia Lane became world-famous after appearing in the show. A generation of visitors still comes to retrace the scenes, and the island leans into the theming heavily.
Other dramas filmed here
Dramas such as Hi Bye, Mama! and Twenty-Five, Twenty-One were also filmed on the island, which keeps younger fans arriving alongside the original Winter Sonata crowd.
Why does Nami Island have its own passport?
The island brands itself as the Naminara Republic, a self-declared micronation with its own flag, currency, stamps and passport.
The passport is not bureaucracy, it is the island's core concept, and the admission fee is dressed up as a visa.
How the micronation works at the gate
Visitors pass through the island's own Immigration and the visa fee includes admission and the round-trip ferry. The Naminara Republic concept gives you a mock passport stamp and the island issues its own currency. If you want a souvenir that costs nothing extra, the stamp in a mock passport is the easiest one on the island.

Is Nami Island really worth it?
It is worth it for Winter Sonata fans and for winter and autumn scenery seekers, while some first-time visitors may have better options and say it is nice but they do not get the big deal.
Fame does not guarantee everyone a good day. Here is an honest verdict by traveller type, weighing each fame driver against the effort of getting there.

Who should go
ZenKimchi's verdict is that the island is best for Winter Sonata fans. If the drama or snowy tree lanes are the reason you came to Korea, the trip delivers. Visitors rate the autumn foliage and winter snow scenes as the best times to visit, and winter temperatures around 3°C to 5°C make the famous snowy look a real possibility rather than a lottery.
Who may skip it
Many visitors say the island is nice but they do not get the big deal, and first-time visitors may have better options. If you have no attachment to the drama and arrive in a flat green season, the island can feel like a pleasant park rather than a must-see. In that case, combining it with another stop makes the day stronger.
On the reviewer's trip the estimated budget was around 50,000-60,000 won per person including entrance, lunch, snacks and transport.

Autumn foliage and a snowy winter scene are the best times to visit, with cherry blossoms usually from mid-April to early May.
The famous photos come from two seasons, and both are reliable rather than lucky.
Season by season
The best time to visit is autumn foliage, or winter for a snowy scene. Autumn colour usually runs from mid-October to early December, with ginkgo at its best late October to mid-November. Cherry blossoms usually bloom from mid-April to early May.
Winter temperatures on one recent visit ranged between 3°C and 5°C, cold enough for snow on the metasequoia lanes that made the island famous.
| Season | What you see | Usual window |
|---|---|---|
| Cherry blossom | Blossom along the river paths | Mid-April to early May |
| Autumn foliage | Gingko and maple colour | Mid-October to early December, ginkgo best late October to mid-November |
| Winter snow | Snowy tree lanes from Winter Sonata | Winter, with temperatures seen between 3°C and 5°C |

The island is open 365 days a year and ferries run in rain, with an icebreaker keeping them going when the river freezes unless a notice is posted. If you want the snowy drama scenery without driving yourself, the Nami Island winter tour pairs the island with Eobi Ice Valley.

Where do billionaires live in Korea?
Not on Nami Island.
This question appears beside Nami Island results, but the answer lies elsewhere in Korea.
Why the question comes up
Nami Island is a day-trip attraction, not a residential address for the very wealthy. Where Korea's richest people live is not stated in this guide's sources, so no claim is made here. What the sources do say is that the island belongs to Chuncheon, Gangwon Province, while the ferry leaves from Gapyeong Wharf in Gapyeong, Gyeonggi Province.
